Ancient researches
1867: Francis Garnier, the French explorer of the Mekong, makes the first description of Vat Phu.

1907: Etienne-Edmond Lunet of the jonquière ( EFEO) draws a map of Vat Phu and his neighborhood.

1914: Henri Parmentier (architect EFEO) ecrit the first scientific report on Vat Phu.


Scientific researches
1986: Plan of protection of the ancient city.

1991-1998: Archaeological activities.
" Archéologique Lao research project " ( PRAL) brought to a successful conclusion by the French mission managed by Marielle Santoni (GUIMET CNRS-MUSEUM) in association with the Ministry Lao de la Culture. The excavations were made meadows of the sacred spring, around the sanctuary and in various préangkoriens temples situated in the ancient city.

" Protection, mapping and studies of the archaeological places ", by the Italian Archaeological mission (Lerici foundation) steered by Patricia Zolese in association with the Ministry Lao de la Culture. Mappings of the ancient city, bare of the city of Lingapura, mapping of the various sites situated along the ancient road towards Angkor (Cambodia).


Preparation of the project Lao-Unesco
1987 and 1990: mission UNESCO-UNDP to identify the possibilities of restoration. A provincial decree approves the preservation of archaeological beuty spots.

1996 - 1997: Laos - UNESCO project (Phase I) managed by the governments of Japan and Italy for the exploration, the study and the archaeological cataloguing of the discoveries located in the province of Champassak.

The project includes these activities:
Prospecting systematic geophysics to locate structures in the ancient City and in the Temple of Vat Phu.
Study géomorphologique for the reconstruction of the ancient monuments.
Systematic protection, covering a territory about 400 km ².
Archaeological mapping, including the spaces of temples, sites and covered hydraulic networks.
SIG ( geographical information system) for stoker the collected data.


1997-1998: Lao-UNESCO ( Phase II ) project managed by the Italian government Training in Archaeology and in history.

Inventory and catalog of the archaeological materials stored to Champassak.
Protection and mapping of all the temples Khmer in the region of Champassak.
Analysis of the structure of the sanctuary and the monuments of Vat Phu.
Study of the hydraulic system.
Finalization of the project of management of the heritage of Champassak.

Heritage Awareness Throug Community Outreach ( HATCH) to mobilize and motivate the local communities to participate in the preservation(conservation) and in the appropriate use of their heritage (in association with the university of WASEDA - Tokyo).


1998: The government LAO adopts the " plan of management of the heritage of Champassak ", a plan(shot) for the preservation and the protection of the archaeological park is presented.

1999-2000: Mission UNESCO-Lao-Italie, scientific research and assistance for the appointment to the world heritage of the humanity.

1999-2002: Lao-UNESCO-Université WASEDA project for the local communities

2001: The archaeological park of Champassak is named World heritage.

2001-2003: Project of cooperation between LAO RDP and JAPAN
Priority is given to the prevention of the erosion of the foundations of the various buildings. Implementation of drainage and canals.
Construction of a warehouse to protect antiquities and archaeological material.
Courts on the restoration of stones and statements of plans.
Equipments of various types (cars, computers, storage of the data).

2003: LAO-UNESCO project - Italy
Preparation of the mission UNESCO PHASE III in 2004

2004: LAO-UNESCO project, managed by Italy
Consolidation of some buildings

2004: Archaeological searches in the zone of the world heritage by the University WASEDA and by the professor MASSAO NISHIMURA

- from 8:00 am till 4:30 pm for the museum

Price lists :
(Only one ticket for de site and the museum)

3 000 kips for Lao people
